May 3rd 2014: Billie Zizi and Friends

dadandICam Neufeld and Billie Zizi are a father daughter duo whose musical inclinations span a broad horizon. From Gypsy Jazz to folk to canadian fiddle tunes this duo has traveled as far as Turkey, Romania and France in search of new sounds. Cam Neufeld has been in the music world for over 40 years and has been writing music, gigging and touring. Cam’s daughter, Billie Zizi, had an early start in music playing electric guitar her band “the rotten socks” at age seven. Since then she has gone on to front her own project as well as backing up her dad is several others. Billie Zizi finished the Jazz Guitar Program at Grant MacEwan in 2012 and is currently recording her first solo album. The richness of traditional canadian fiddle music in proximity to Billie’s smoky jazz vocals and quirky original folk music creates a beautiful and odd pairing of old and new. You can listen to Billie Zizi here.

Shorr has studied with some of the best teachers and players in the international jazz community including Miles Okazaki, Ben Monder, Peter Bernstein and Tom Guarna. He has also studied with David Occhipinti at Humber College of Music in Toronto, and under Larry Roy at the University of Manitoba. Screenshot 2014-02-14 14.43.51Keith Price landed his first gigs at age fifteen. First influenced by pop, punk and heavy metal, Price discovered jazz through the intensity and spirituality of John Coltrane. At age 19, Price began his formal studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Upon his return to Winnipeg, Price turned down a scholarship at The New School University in New York City and opted instead to stay in Steve Kirby’s newly established jazz program at the University of Manitoba and study with Larry Roy. He has also studied in Boston with renowned guitar guru Mick Goodrick. The 29 year-old released a solo acoustic guitar album in May of 2013 which features mellow and introspective arrangements of original compositions, tunes by Neil Young, The Weakerthans, Radiohead, and Bob Dylan, and a re-harmonization of ‘Darn That Dream’, a jazz standard. Price’s sophomore album,’Gaia/Goya’, a mix of indie rock/pop covers and a six-part suite he wrote while traveling Canada, The U.S, and Europe peaked for two weeks at the #2 on the Canadian jazz radio chart (!earshot). It was also the runner-up in the 2013 Julian Award for Excellence for Emerging Canadian Artists. ‘Breakfast Of Champions’, his debut album of original compositions, was released in the fall of ’09. The album was nominated for the TD Grand Prix Du Jazz and The Galaxie Rising Star awards at the 2010 Montreal International Jazz Fest. You can listen to Keith Price’s work here. February 23rd 2014: Eighty Strings with Shannon Kristjanson

121101 music 04.jpgDuring the summer of 2012, Jonathan Wong and Chuck Kroeker got together and recorded ‘Eighty Strings’, an eclectic album of instrumental music recorded on many different guitars, a surprising array of bass guitars, banjo and violin.  The number of strings on all the instruments used in the recording was exactly eighty – hence the title of the CD. You can listen to the tracks here. All proceeds from sales of the CD have been donated to Hospitality House Refugee Ministry, a non-profit organization that has been sponsoring and supporting refugees in Winnipeg for many years.  So far, just over $6000 has been raised from sales.
